As per poll, just curious...

As a commuter (Huntingdon -> Kings Cross -> Shepherd's Bush and back each day) I have to say that I hate trains. I am certainly interested in the great age of steam to the extent that I wouldn't miss Dibnah on the TV but no more than that.

Just Maestros for me as well, thanks.
I only like trains when I'm feeling Carriageous, or when, as MaestroMatt says Dibnah is on telly.

Ah yes, can't beat a bit of Dibnah :D

I like steam trains, and some of the older, rarer trains, but not to the point (yet!) of being obsessive or very knowledgeable. I commute by train every day, but see very little of interest except the Class 31 diesels that have taken over the Greenbank train in the morning.
Planes on the other hand... since starting work in an office right next to the Manchester Airport flightpath, and having chuffing great huge 747s hurtling past the window I've become really plane-obsessed!
I guess I like anything with an engine - the bigger and louder the better! :D

Yup, im a train fan. I live not far from the East Lancashire Railway, so i am a regular visitor there. (Worth a visit - very good day out indeed). Other family members are train-buffs too so it stands to reason ive picked it up over the years.
As for planes, during the summer months, the Viewing Park at Manchester Airport becomes a second home to me at weekends. Aviation is my second love, the first being BMC/Rover tin.
:)
(Cant beat a bit of Dibnah - he live local to me too!)

I work on the 10th floor of a building on the Heathrow flight path just a few miles from Heathrow and we have planes passing every 30 seconds or so - not so close that you can hear them through the double glazing, but the view is good.

Now you're talking! Don't even get me started on Concorde!:rage: My girlfriend's flat is on the Heathrow flightpath (Fulham Road) and you could hear Concorde about a minute before you could spot it. Those were the days <wipes tears from eyes> watching Concorde on a late Summer's evening as it flew down towards Heathrow. I Blame Blair. Oops nearly got myself started there ;)
Of course there's only one thing better than the roar of Concorde (or that matter the Avro Vulcan) and that's the sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin engine - either on its own in a spirfire or all four of 'm working in tandem on a Lanc. Music to my ears!

Forget that! Although it's smaller, the scream of a lockheed C5 Galaxy is quite something (doh, my old model aircraft making days are coming out, the never did to a pre-moulded Galaxy kit but i did make a B52 ;) )

Now we know where your paint-applying skills came from! Did you paint them before assembly or chance your luck when it was all in one piece?
I did the latter with good results. The Short Sunderland was probably my most ambitious model, as well as a Lanc, Wellington, Blenheim, Fairy Battle, Spit, Hurricane, Twin Otter, Lysander, ME109, Dornier 88(?), A10A, Hawker Hunter, Tornado... What a misspent youth!

Bit of both IIRC, was about 10-11 years ago now! Got the good old Humbrol, i still have some left. Used to use a mini air brush with a canistor of air for spraying the big plane's like the B52, KC-135 and stuff like that. Was quite good fun at the time, only did it to compete with my mate :D

Obviously, I like maestos, as for trains, i'd rather not go there, I even ended up disliking steam trains after I got soot in my eye that stayed there for 24 hours and in my young mind at the time was convinced I would go blind!
Aircraft today dont intrest me nearly so much as wartime aircraft, big bombers certainly get my vote in particular the Wellington and the B17 Flying Fortress, as well as the Sunderland Flying boats and the Short Sterling. The later two for other reasons too, which was that my great great Grandfather designed them both! :p
In recent years due to my line of work, I have become keen on ships, somthing that never used to appeal to me before, but now, they do, primaraly the Type 42 Destroyer, thing with these is the main engines you can get inside as the modules are that big, and they way it all comes together is facinating. My best experience so far was a week on HMS Southampton after a major refit recently, when your stood on the back end of that and its doing 35 knots it was quite somthing!
It will be criminal when they get scrapped, then again its not like the government is stranger to scrapping good ships i.e the Type 22's "oh we dont want these because we cant mount a gun on the front". So they sell two of them to the Romanians (at a fraction of what they had cost us in build and maintenance) and whats the first thing they do? Mount a gun on the front. We all know the real reasons for all the shrinking of the fleet, but I won't rant about that anymore!!

I voted "I like Trains and Maestro's," but seeing that 'planes came up... I am also into 1940's war aircraft too.

I used to have one of those!!!:D They used to hang on sewing cotton from the ceiling, when I moved house, they were terribly dusty, and it never came off, and did more damage when I tried!

I guess we all like large noisey machines then... :)
Here's one i snapped last year. 1930's Junkers JU-52 meets 747. The differeance in size was quite scary, but the little one made the better noise!

Interesting poll, I've noticed an odd connection between the two before aswell :)
I used to be hooked, mainly on the modern scene (60s on) rather than steam and even spent whole weeks just travelling about the UK to see how far I could go and how many miles I could clock behind my favourite locomotives. I think I must have covered virtually all the track in the country apart from a couple of branches in the Welsh Valleys and parts of the North East. Completely insane but a great way to explore new places and meet different people.
I now work in operations for a major train operator in the South so it's more of a professional interest nowadays. After a 2 hour commute to London every day I'm usually glad to see the back of trains by the weekend, and to be honest most of the interesting stuff has been withdrawn now anyway. I'm certainly not cured though!
Planes and ships have never really inspired me in the same way, but I guess it would be different if I worked around them every day.

You'll not hang one of those on the cieling! It's a 1:72 Corgi die cast metal one - It'd pull your house down!
I'm not into boats/ships, but owning a car that drives like the QE2........

There does appear to be a correlation, doesn't there?
I'm quite into trains myself. I wish I had been around in the Golden Age of Steam, but I certainly have an interest in slightly more modern stuff as well, not least the Mk1 Southern Region EMUs with which I grew up and am now seeing slowly disappear. I'm as bad at accepting the new products with trains as I am with cars, I'm afraid. With the exception of these SR EMUs, I still bemoan the departure from loco. haulage, although I can see the benefits of multiple units.

Yes, I have a certain predilection towards - shall we say - ornithology, especially during the summer months. Say no more, nudge nudge, wink wink, nod's as good as a wink to a blind bat, eh? etc...

Hurrah For F153!!! My wife took me to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight for a treat last week... I nearly passed out with overload of 2 Hurries, 7 Spits and a chuffing great Lanc, all in flying condition

Get yourself to the BL/BMC rally at the beginning of August. A whole field of BMC's finest, a huge Maestro/Montego club stand, AND the Battle of Britain memorial flypast!

Way cool! I am off up there (Lincoln) sometime this year myself. Something I've wanted to do for years! That's some treat. Bet you love the wife for that!
Did you know there's another chuffin' great Lanc' 15 minutes down the road from there? It is a runner, on all four engines I think (bet that sounds great!) but it doesn't fly. YET. :p This one's called "Just Jane" (from memory!).
Just something to charge my camera batteries for! :D

Getting back on "track" here.......
Yes a Merlin engine does sound cracking, almost like a Class 66 winding up from standstill. Ahem!
I'm into modelling trains as it happens, and I will be off the the London Festival at Alexandra Palace tomorrow.:D

I too have a greater interest in model railways than real ones.
My interest in Maestros/Montegos etc is more to do with budget performance and modifiability than because "it's a Maestro". To be honest I am into anything with an engine and wheels (except buses/coaches) and speed boats.
My favorate model planes were the ones filled with french bangers.
