Hi I need to change a front wheel bearing on my 89 turbo diesel maestro. Is it a pain to do? I have access to a scrap one so is it easier to swap the whole hub assembly from the scrap one? I reasonably handy with a spanner (and hammer).
Thanks for looking

Easier to change the whole hub carrier but make sure the spare carrier is the same later version with one piece bearing. I changed my carriers, luckily bought a new pair a few years ago. I'm keeping the old ones and getting new bearings fitted ready for next time! You'll need someone to press out the old bearing and press new one in if keeping old carriers.

Try and get the later single piece roller bearings, rather than the earlier single piece ball bearings. They are exactly the same on the outside. Part number for the later and better roller bearings is:
FRONT or REAR wheel bearing kit for the MGF, & Lotus Elise, FRONT ONLY for the Rover 100 series, Maestro, Metro, Montego and MG Metro range, plus Nissan 280ZX and 300EX, equivalent to QH part number QWB661, Lockheed part number BK405 and Unipart / OE reference GHK1366
(QWB594 or GHK1260 is the earlier and inferior ball bearing type)
