"Stop me and buy one!"

It looks a bit ratty, quite unusual though...

Wow - never seen that before. Someone should buy it and take it to MGM 2003 and sell ice creams and cold drinks from it!

I think ill pass on that one this time.

Is it hard ice van because it doesn't have Mr Whippy?

I was just thinking the Maestro LM10 project spawned tonnes of varients:

Maestro hatch
Maestro van
Montego saloon
Montego estate

plus

Maestro camper (Bailey)
Maestro camper (Tandy)
Maestro Ice Cream Van
Montego Van
Montego Cabriolet
Montego Limousine
Montego Hearse

Anyone else know of any more?

There were the 'Estong Maestro's' that were manufactured in China when the tooling was sold there. The van version came with proper plastic bumpers rather than metal ones...

more info can be found here:

http://austinrover.mg-rover.org/index.htm

Just click under the 'Maestro & Montego' section - there is a page about the Estong Maestro's

Great stuff - also see how they have colour coded the door surrounds which never happened on any UK built cars.

Are they still in production - could be a source of new parts!

I once seen a montego hearse and a limo family car a few years a go. Dont know if they are still in use or still in this world. Both looked very smart at the time though.

I see some Maestro vans with the plastic bumpers about...and full width headlights like the saloon..quite nice..:D

There is a TRAGIC Montego lurking round where I work..but I never can get a pic. It's covered in all sorts of logos, stickers, bolt on lights, spoilers, black finned rear window etc, etc...

It has no less than 5 Brake lights fitted extra to the standard ones, and they range from cut into the spoiler, to bolted on, on stalks.

It's covered in reflectors too..it's a beige 1.6L I think..hard to tell..but it's truly distressing to see it!

I LIKE what they've dome in the pic above with colour co-ordinated door frames...:D Mine are fading...hmm...

Halfords are doing three for the price of one on their spray paints at the moment. Including Satin black, which is the paint for the door surrounds and a zinc based primer for repelling rust - very useful.

I even found a can of Zircon Blue metallic for my MG1600 which was good as that colour has not been used for years.

Very good offer! I may get some - can you just spray the black on to the surrounds (over faded old paint) or do they need a bit of wet and dry and some primer first? Also, is that the right colour for the black on the bumpers and other plastic trim? Same question about sanding/primer for them as well.

I've never heard of the cabriolet, anyone ever had one?

ARGH!!!! IT'S FOR SALE AGAIN!!!

That's the 3rd time I've seen the ice cream van for sale! It's particularly irritating as..

1) I don't have £1,500 :(
2) I don't have space :(
3) IT'S VERY CLOSE!! :(

Might give them a ring and ask if I can take some pics.

I would say that a bit of very fine wet and dry wouldn't do any harm but you'll probably get away without the primer unless there is any bare metal exposed in which case you would want to rub it down and use some zinc-based primer to keep away the rust.

If I am touching up crusty bits on my car I also use Kurust and follow this routine.

Rub down/Kurust/Primer/rub again/couple of coats of paint/T-cut/laquer

If you're door surrounds are in good nick but they have just faded you might get away with just spraying over th faded paint. not sure whether Satin Black needs laquer (it will say on the tin). Your main worry will be the masking. Take time over this as it will be worth it!

The 3 cans I bought were zinc based primer, Zircon Blue Metallic and Laquer. I might go back and get some Satin Black and some Flame Red for the Turbo.

I'mk not a massive fan of Halfords but their spray paints have much better jets that the Holts cans that most motor factors sell.

There's a guy called Tony who has just bought a B-reg MG Montego EFi cabriolet and it also has the digital dash.

If you go to the thread called "hi" on the off-topic forum then you'll see some pictures of it!

I have just had a look at Keith Adams website and read the article about the Chinese Maestros. It says in teh article that they did not build very many but that seems difficult to believe as they have obviously spent a fair bit of cash developing them.

Look at the picture below. It looks like an early Maestro in Azure Blue (unlike the Ledbury Maestros that looked like late model Clubmans) but the dash is the Montego dash from the last Maestros with a different steering wheel.

The interesting bit is the engine. They have used a fuel injected Toyota engine that despite being slightly bigger than the A-series produces less power and a 0-60 time of 22 seconds. Is this because it is a 1.3 diesel? After all the 1.3 with SU carb had a 0-60 time of 12.9 seconds.

Anyway it still looks fantastic and could easily be fitted with a T16!

They may have not produced many, but from the very few photos there are, they look quite good. (dont know about that steering wheel though...)

At least we know where the tooling has gone when people start asking for new body panels...

Aswell as Chinese Maestro's, there are also Indian Montego's that were built by a company called Sipani. Production lasted only 18 months with only 287 cars produced.

Yet again, this info is from the Unofficial Austin Rover resource under the Maestro & Montego section.

Below is a picture of the 'Sipani Montego'

I agree with Richard, that steering wheel looks a bit rubbish. The leather bound three-spoke is better.

How much would it cost to bring one back from China? I bet it would be prohibitive but more useful for reshelling an MG Maestro than a Bulagrian Maestro because the wings and bumpers are the same. All you would need to do is add the spoilers, convert from left hand drive and change the engine!

Steering wheel looks a bit LDV Convoy - ish to me.

Yes I think it looks just like the LDV steering wheel. I used to drive those when I worked for the Students' union at university. Lots of the dash was similar especially the speedo pod and switches.

What a Maestro/Montego steering wheel should look like!

Are those Chinese Maestros fitted with 14" wheels?
Horrid steering wheel on it though

I just saw Maria looking at this thread and thought brilliant!
I have the plastic front bumper set-up for my van, and was wandering if a Monty estate item would fit on the rear? Probably have to cut it down a bit. Oh well, I'm going to have a look at that Rover website now.;)

There was a reason for me looking at this thread! I was trying to find the URL for those Chinese Maestros. Only found pages in Chinese, but I've sent off a speculative email to the webmaster's address to see if I can get through to someone who might know about buying bodyshells.

Speaking of bodyshells, could everyone who's firmly interested in the offer of discout panel sets please PM me. (Here if you missed it 1st time round http://www.maestro.org.uk/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=149) PM me with your name and contact details. Now Monstro's out, I'm hoping for some firm idea of numbers so I can move on with the deal.

If it didn't have one, and it was mine, I would need the mr whippy machine out of an old bedford van, the hard ice cream was a con of the higest order, as was cornflour ice cream, yuck

If anyone should get a Chinese Maestro, The Toyota engines should come highly recommended for reliability. I have owned a Toyota Liteace for the past three years and I can't fault it. So much so, I have recently bought another Toyota! I might get one of these new vans and go into courier work!;)

That Toyota engine I believe is a 1.3 litre diesel. 0-60mph is 22 seconds!

I'd love to bring it along to a show sometime, I just need to get it tidied-up and painted the original beige. The grill is probably a vp, I bought the van with front end damage and just used different parts from the breakers yard to get her back on the road. It did have two fold down seats and table in the back, but I've taken them out and left them in the shed. I've put a few pictures of her here http://mysite.freeserve.com/maestrovan
