View Full Version : Speedo Slipping

My efi with digi dash (fitted by me) has occasionaly had the speedo start falling when accelerating hard. The other day when running on a fast dual carrigeway it went from 70ish to 0 when I pressed the clutch it came back up. It seems to me that somehow the speed transducer seems to slip in the drive. I cant however remove the drive from the gearbox, totally siezed in.
One idea is get a replacement normal speed transducer and somehow rig up a 1600 speed transducer to feed just the speedo. Are the original efi digi speed transducers (anyone got one for sale?) any better than the later type or is there a fix for mine?
Cheers

Could it not be a poor connection some where rather than the drive itself.

Which transducer have you actually got fitted?

Hi Gary
Ive got a genuine later efi one got it brand new,it looks very simmilar to a rover 800 one but it came with an adaptor loom to fit the maestro.
Its only when you put your foot down it drops off :banghead:

Classic signs of the gearbox about to give up, but usually only happens to the turbo models. Check the play in the diff.

It only started doing it with the digi dash and theres no noise whatsoever from the gearbox. What gives up on the box to make this happen?

Diff bearings wear and can break the cage the balls sit in leading to excess movement of the diff. The first symptom is a wobble on acceleration and the speedo stopping working.

If it is just the digi-dash that has "caused" it then it could well be the cable not engaging in the sensor properly. I had great fun getting the cable into the gearbox on the missus 220!

Ive just been out and had it to bits, it looks like the transducer is ever so slightly smaller than the cable it replaced and it seems the drive when accelerating hard spins and leave the transducer spindle still.
It would help if I could get the bloody drive out the box buts is seized solid, tried allsorts but cant move it at all

You have removed the bolt holding it in place haven't you ;) :)

Mole grips or one of them rounded bolt removers, WD40 with time and patience it'll come out

Ive removed the bolt, trouble is there aint a lot of room for mole grips ,are you on about stud removers? The other thing you have to watch is that the tube doesnt bend and close the slot for the clip. I think if i could fasten it without the clip it may push down a bit further into the drive

I meant something like this

There are several different designs of speedo drive for the PG1 box, but I know the one you mean.

Im not sure you'd get in with that Dan,ive tried a new fix this morning ,doing away with the clip and putting a cable tie under the securing plate and through the top of the connector allowing the speed transducer to sit a tad deeper in the drive. Off to work in a bit so ill see if it works
