Right, bear with me whilst i try and make this post as factual as possible.

Ive recently changed the thermostat in my maestro for an 82degree one. It was the only one that'd fit that Wilco had at the time, and I was desperate.

The temperature gauge never seems to go above 1/4 and sometimes 1/3,, but leave it standing for 10-15 minutes after driving (normally, not hard) and the red light flashes with the gauge at 1/2 up. there was one incident where at 3am after driving back from a gig that the gauge just rose and rose and hit the end of the scale. 10 minutes at the side of the road and a restart saw the end of that. never again has it ever hit the top.

someone said to me the ECU is screwed,, but i didn't think these had them?

I assume your maestro is either a 1.3 or 1.6 model?

These models have a Fuel ecu which can fail giving false temp readings causing the warning light to activate, as well as over fueling.

Depending on age it will be located either:

A) on early cars up behind the steering column.
B) on later cars fitted to the 'roof panel' in the glove box.

Some times simply cleaning the contacts on the multi plug can sort the problem, but 9/10 its a main fault and the fuel ecu needs to be changed.

hope that helps.

Mal.
