View Full Version : Maestros at Silverstone Today

First round of the MGOC championship was at Silverstone today, with class B involving a field of 23 (I think?) Maestros. There's always plenty of action here but introduce a bit of torrential rain and hail 2 laps into the race and things become very entertaining indeed! I couldn't tell you the result - to be honest my sides were splitting at some of the mayhem going on :D
If you missed it there'll be plenty more races in the series over the next few months. The following pictures are taken at the Luffield curves just before the start/finish straight.

Good pics you've linked to, Jon.
It's good to see the MGOC championship going from strength to strength with such a healthy entry. I would definitely recommend to anyone coming to see for themselves Maestros at the absolute limit (and beyond!).

Nice to see so many great looking MG Maestros that I have never seen before. Interesting also to see those older 14" alloys in use - cheesegraters and dish alloys!

Yeah, all the dished alloys that are left seem to be on race cars!

Strange that because although they look great, when I had them on my HLE they got quite hot when braking.

Great wheels on a great car - until a friend of mine drove it into a pickup truck! That picture was taken in 2001 so you can see it was in good nick at 18 years old.

I've got 4 dished alloys off my old VDP Montego, in my back yard awaiting renovation, and 4 180/65TD remould tyres at a friend's shop (from a place in Lockerbie) awaiting fitting to said wheels when they have been done up. Then fitted to Monty. I think they are really nice looking wheels, myself.
The fifth dished alloy was rather badly buckled, and if RDGelder can let me have the pics I will post them to show you how badly... not good!

Rich - if you're looking for a replacement then I know where there is a set on a Monty VP - they're at Rush green scrappers in Hitchin. Can't remember exactly what condition they are in but I know they're not too damaged and certainly not buckled.
I don't know how rare these wheels are.....

Is it one size fits all? Same for both Maestro & Montego?

Thanks F153JUE, could you find out a price? I am sure the 4 I have will be fine, with a steelie in the boot (as per the 1987 MG Metro, although the tyres were the same size:o ) but there's no telling what faults these wheels might have judging by the state of the buckled 'fifth wheel'... And yes, RDGelder, I am sure these alloys are interchangeable between Maestros and Montegos (ie same hubs?). Mebbe make a move to getting these wheels 'done up' either tomorrow or friday (days off...)?
The pics of the 'fifth wheel' are lost, but suffice to say, there was a 'bulge' on the outer edge and a bald spot on the inner edge of the tyre at the same point of the circumference, and *both* defects had bits of wire sticking out of them... and I thought the car 'shimmied' a bit at low speeds (it failed its MoT [at which point I thought I would run it into the ground and break it when the existing MoT ran out 3 months later] on massive welding and, errm ,a buckled wheel...)! Ah well.
The buckled wheel was 'banana-shaped, RDGelder can verify this having seen it for himself!
An idea of price would be nice, F153JUE. I will get in touch by PM when the wheels are in 'dry dock'. Cheers.

The reason why most Race Maestro's have the dished 14 inch alloys is because these are lighter than than 14 inch cheesegraters. They're are in fact two types of dished alloys can't remember the codes but one is slighly lighter than the other.
