Okay, it does - just. I've been having to really, really slam it today and even then it has trouble catching and engaging the lock. Do i need to adjust the striker pin or the lock - and how?
Help is much appreciated - before i shatter the glass!

my first line of attak would be to adjust the striker pin. this is easy, just slacken the two bolts holding it down and move it towards you then tighten it up again. try to not move it from side to side as you'll end up with it not being central to the lock, if this happens just offer the tailgate to it to see if its central still
try moving it up 2 or 3 mm and see how it helps, if you move it too far the boot lid will rattle as you drive.

This is another linch the designer who made this part. Look closely at the striker pin. If there is a groove in the silly plastic sleve or as it was in my case, barely still recognisable, this will be the problem. Short term fix, get a load of electrical insulation tape wrapped around it to build the size back up, and it should shut again no problem. Also, if you can, spin the plastic sleve so the un worn side is now on the side it will wear.
Then, buy a load of them from Ledbury for the future, or Wonko had a neat idea using a couple of 8mm nuts and a bolt if I remember correctly?

have you managed to fix the problem or do we need to start looking for other answers?

I have moved the striker pin up a few millimeters which has solved the problem nicely.
Cheers for your help.

That striker is a pain. Mine did that and gradually wore away to "no latch" levels.
In the end I ground the pin off, and used an M13 bolt, and 4 nuts through the plate to make a "new" striker pin. My boot locks and hold firmly every time now..wish I'd done it months ago!
I know it's not stock...but..:)
