Hi Everyone,

This is probably a silly question - but as I said in my first post, I am Green not only because of my car's colour, but also because I am on a pretty steep learning curve -

I've been on an ongoing mission to sort out my car's running on and fuel economy problems with some success (thanks for earlier advice to those who gave it - I'm still following some of it up). In my travels, though, I've found a vacuum pipe that I'm not sure where it should be attached to. It comes out in front of the air filter housing unit near to where the brake servo vacuum hose attaches. Anyway, it dangles from there. I looked at my Hayes book and can see where it looks like it SHOULD be attached - to the vacuum switch near the carburator on the right hand side- but don't actually see a vacuum switch on my car - does that make any sense at all (ie will a car run without one) or am I just not looking hard enough (which is entirely possible)...

Thanks

Could you give a few details about what engine and age it is?

There are several vacuum pipe arrangements possible which work fine.

However if you have got a spare open end free then this will seriously mess up the fueling/timing of the car making it very lumpy and drinking fuel.

It's a 1.3L engine and a G reg (1989) - it is also pretty thirsty!!

Hello there. At that age I would say that your car has the manual choke type of carburreter, which does not have a vacuum switch fitted. I would hazard a guess that the pipe you refer to shoud be connected to the inlet air temp control valve on the underside of the air filter box assembly. two pipes are attatched to this valve one from the manifold junction and one from the air temp control flap on the air intake of the air filter box.

Cheers Gary ;)

on my car which is similar to yours my setup is:

tube from manifold (where servo vacumm is also taken off) which then splits off through 'T' pieces etc, one goes to the distributor, another goes to the carb, (not a vac switch, just a connection) and the other goes to the underside of the airfilter box. the air filter box has 2 connections both together this is because inside there is a vac switch controling a flap for hot air intake; one connectoin is for the 'supply' from the manifold and the other connection goes from under the air cleaner to the vacum control unit on top of the air intake duct which is a small cylindrical shape thing. connect it all up like that and u will be ok,

Its definitely the same set up as mine has.

HI Andy,

That all makes sense but I still can't seem to find where it should connect to the carb. There is no obvious spigot or vacuum point. Looking at the carb from the front of the car, attached to the right is the choke and accelerator cable - Again, maybe I just need to look harder, but had the piston damper off last night to get a better look and still had no luck - will keep going though - but any clues as to where to look for where it attaches to the carb gratefully recieved...

Under the air filter at the front of the carb there is a vacuum point on my carb. It is hidden by the air filter so easily missed.

this picture shows the connection.
