Here's to everyone who wants to show off their desktop:
Go to your desktop screen (or Startup screen) and press the key at the top of the keyboard called 'Print Screen/SysRq'
Then go to a Paint program and click Edit and Paste. There's your 'screenshot' ready to save and to upload to the web.

You will have to reduce the image to a width of 500 pixels while it's on paint.

Ok, here we go, if anyone can tell me exactly what the item in the picture is, and what it does, I will buy and give you a www.maestro.org.uk sticker! This IS my desktop, its part of another obsession I have, which I try to keep secret.....

Richard, do you have NFS too? I wonder if anyone can offer a Maestro / Montego for the said game? That would be good. :)

Stephen, It is 'NFS Porsche 2000'
Somehow i dont think a Maestro would do very well in a race with a 911.
Perhaps a 'NFS British Leyland' edition would be much more like it!
D87 SMW
13th June 2003, 21:07
I have NFS Road Challenge. You can download allsorts of cars on it. I have things from Ladas to Mondeo police cars to the Dukes of Hazzard General Lee! Yee-ha!
( )
Oh, and the Scania truck!
People create and edit their own cars using the data files. I would have a go at creating a Maestro if I had the chance. Can anyone tell me how?
Moving back to the subject, is your resolution 1152x864?
Austin-Rover
13th June 2003, 21:18
My screen resolution is 1024 X 768. I think it all depends on what size your computer screen is and how blind you are....
(I may have to look at that game next time i am down at your place to see F170)
Dave
13th June 2003, 21:20
My graphics card would melt at that resolution. I use 1024x768 - and i suspect most other Windows users do aswell.
Dave

I practically have a whole website on my desktop. Basically, it makes use of active desktop and I have links to load different desktops, with different Maestros, Aston Martins, Jaguars or whatever, as well as trains or landscape photographs, each with an appropriate bacgkround. It all works rather well. I've just aquired an Apple iBook, which so far as I can tell doesn't support Active Desktop, so I simply have a picture of F690OTF on the desktop.
I'm running Windows 2000, just to be different.

I had it going nicely, could see your face in the paintwork til i gave it to my Dad, hes never washed it yet, and sadly the rust has taken hold! lol.
Where did the rust fall out from? Have you noticed that one of the most popular brands of bodyfiller has a maestro on the fron of its tin? What are they getting at i wonder? :D

Did anyone find out what Rich's desktop is?
Rich
18th June 2003, 20:24
Opps, rather belated monday! Sorry Changing the point of the thread entirly now......
Right, the unit in the picture is called a Tanflo. Everyone had the right sort of idea about it, but dave was the closest in a funny sort of way.
These units are fitted to Naval ships, and is just one of the many things i work on. They are primaraly Air Conditioning Units, yet they also do filter the air, and what everyone missed is that they are heaters too. The pipes going to it are a supply of chilled water.
So, why would I want a picture of that on my desktop, well its inspiration and it fits in with another thing I like I suppose. A 3 phase 440v motor is fitted to the fan inside, and when it starts the noise they make is just superb! The same thing goes with all heavy/industrial motors and fans, for me the noise of them starting is just great! If only I had a 3 phase supply at home!
Going on the prinicpals of how the Tanflo works, this leads me onto another hair brained scheme! After looking at prices of domestic air-con systems I consider them to be very expensive for what they do, I have devised my own plan, to keep me cool, at minimal expense, and I may be inclined to carry out the plan.
It couldnt be simpler, all you need to provide a supply of chilled water is lots of copper pipe, a chest frezer and a domestic central heating pump. By laying plenty of copper pipe in a chest freezer, and circulating water through it with the pump, it can be achieved, i am sure! All you then need is a unit which will accept the chilled water, and blow air over a matrix (like the heater in your maestro/montego) which will blow cold air into the room! I even think a car radiator and fan would do.
Water gets cooled in the frezer, cold water circulates to heat exchanger, warmer water returns to frezer for chilling, the cycle continues! It can't fail in its basic terms, but there would be need for a device to monitor the water temp to stop it freezing, and also, would the compressor on the frezer burn out? One way to find out!;)
Any other budding inventors got any thoughts?
Rich (Mad as a March Hare!)
tony
18th June 2003, 20:40
rich ,not much of a home life happening there:D thats a good idea you have there rich,or you can just leave the freezer door open:laugh: sorry rich
tony
18th June 2003, 20:49
now that you have got me thinking using the freezer to cool the water,u need to fill the freezer with copper or plastic pipe small hole in the side of the freezer for the pipes to come out and tap them into your central heating ! combi heating would be best and then it uses your normal raditors.what do u think? rich

Maria
19th June 2003, 21:25
Active Desktop basically allows your desktop to act as a kind of webpage, which means you can use HTML links on it if you really want to, you can use a .jpg instead of a .bmp as the background, use channels, and generally do a host of things that no-one in their right mind would want to.
Those 2 racing liveries haven't been seen in a few years. I'll have to get some desktops done of the current lot.

Press print screen. This will then store an image off your desktop on an invisible clipboard.
To access this you need to open up a graphics program such as paint, paint shop pro or coral draw.
You then need to go to edit, then paste and your desktop should then appear as a new image
Hope that helps

How's about this at work, then? The damn computer defaults to this regardless of what was the background the day before... oh, and it will 'tile' or 'centre' but not stretch (even my peat-fired babbage number generator at home will let the background 'stretch'!!!)
And it's not patterned either (though it appears so below).

I think you have the same printer as me! Or at least the same icon for it!
Rich

21st June 2003, 00:06
Printers, aha ha ha, yes... I've inherited my works computer etc off a disabled lady who retired, but as she was disabled she had her own Deskjet colour printer... I used this whenever possible, being a lazy git, but a rather unpleasant chap from ICT (Information and Computer Technology dept, formerly known as ISD, Information Services Desk - anyone else in Local Government recognise this nonsense???) reset my default printer to the office Laserjet 5.5M 'because it is more economical'... Any similarity between this icon and anyone else's are totally accidental, as all good films say...
So, just like any 'background' I want, I also need to reset my personal default printer each time I log on as well. The fact that the Deskjet cannot print 'straight' letters but they all come out at an angle of up to 10 degrees, is a cause of much merriment in the office - we don't get many laughs!
Anyway, here's my Screen on my home computer (my late missus and my stepdaughter a couple of years ago), which will allow me to 'stretch' the background should I want, unlike that at work. I also regularly visit [URL=http://wrecked exotics.com] for inspiration should I feel like a change... I've even had an Allegro on my Screen once.

Very nice, F170 GGT! I thought I recognised the background - RDGelder never wants to photograph my Monty though, funny that...
Look forward to seeing F170 GGT 'in the flesh' when we locals get our little 'Weekend Run' together (see 'Events and Meetings' for details).
Wonko_The_Sane,
Re 'computers at work', these little details are just that: 'little details'. Some bloke comes and alters the settings then says 'don't try to set it back' while in the 'winnt' directory... what dos it matter (ha ha, 'dos'... - one of our two systems appears to be dos-based, and the other is Unix - see what contempt we are held in???)??? There's an 'integrated system' coming 'soon...' but then so is the end of the world... hey ho.
To paraphrase your signature. "Ne te confundant illegitimi" (or so I'm told) - it gets more like Life of Brian every hour ("...unite against the common enemy" - only it could be one of several factions).

Rich, Photo's of Monty can be arranged next time you are round. Get a few pics of its new modifications ;) . Such as its new front spoiler....
....its new interior lights. Oh, and an action shot of the fuel filler release that we installed!!!!
e692wtt
23rd June 2003, 23:18
I'll take you up on that. Give me a chance to get the broken window fixed, though. And how can we avoid the primer below the fuel filler? Answers on a postcard, please...
I'd like to 'publicly' thank RDGelder for all the help he's given me over the last couple of weeks in swapping bits off the VDP onto Monty.
He's made things a whole lot easier - assisted me in removing the roof lining from the VDP and fitting it to Monty in 90 minutes (the old one in Monty had been missing 3 years...), fitting the fuel filler release and the rear internal lights from the VDP including associated wiring, and fitting the front spoiler off the VDP to Monty (including removing Monty's front bumper, spotting the bolts we'd failed to undo, and suggesting I drill the base of the bumper to mount the spoiler [I'd normally use a heated nail or screw... captain lash-it-up strikes again...], fitting said spoiler and putting the car back together again).
He's also encouraging me to swap the wheels from the VDP over (hence my disbelief at finding 'metric tyres' at a tenner + carriage + VAT) and to get the bodywork tidied when I get some cash (later this year).
Nice one, RDGelder!!!

That's a very nice photo you've got there. It's the first time I've really realised what colour the car is; it looks like the Flame Red the Turbos were done in, but all the other red Specials I've seen were a bit darker, I thought. Were they supposed to be the same colour?
Nice touch with the colour-coded mirrors, as well.
D87 SMW
24th June 2003, 14:56
F170 is finished in Flame Red 1989, other Specials could be done in the earlier Flame Red which I think is a tad darker. (?)
I don't want to modify F170, but the white Specials had colour-coded wing mirrors... so why not the red ones.
Don't think it's a proper 'modification,' though.
