Estate tailgate strut grief

Hi there,

The struts on my Monty Estate tailgate have died, and I've got a couple of good used ones to replace them with. Unfortunately, when I unscrewed the bolt holding one of them on to the door frame, the captive nut fell down inside the panel... I'm obviously reluctant to try the other side in case the same happens.

Any ideas where to go from here?

The struts come off the ball joint. Some have a circlip, some have a pin to keep them in place.

Mind you, I have just removed the struts from the estate I was scraping and IIRC the nuts holding the mounting bolts were fixed to the body and the tailgate so did not fall away. You should be able to access the back of the hole to fit another nut through the top of the piller after pulling the rooflining down in that corner.
