My city X 1300 with A series engine has a very slow tickover when cold and then a very fast tickover when warm. Isn't the auto choke supposed to keep it the same, any ideas what's wrong?

Hello John, generally speaking the automatic choke should provide a faster idle speed when the engine is cold then when warm the idle speed is quite slow unless an electrical or mechanical load slows the engine speed below a pre determined limit then the fuel ecu will compensate and speed up the engine.

Your problem could be due to one or more things. You could start by visually checking the simple things like the condition of the air filter, the hot air pipe is in good condition and connected and the manifold not blowing. Then check all the vacuum and breather hoses for leaks and blockages etc. I rather suspect it may turn out to be more complicated than that though, it could well be a faulty vacuum switch or orfco valve on the carburettor and incorrect carburettor settings.
