Hey guys...

Wondering if anyone can help me. The Maestro started squeaking today (Not alternator belt).

I sat and fiddled and it only happens when the headlights are on or it chirps when the indicator flashes. Having the rear window heater on doesn't make it happen nor do the wipers.

Knowing the headlights don't have any moving parts, I thought it may be related to...

My alternator light coming on for about a minute after I did my thermostat. Obviously, the alternator got a little wet when I had a hose under there and so on, so could I have damaged it? It goes away when you rev the engine and at anything more than idle.

Alternator light doesn't seem to be glowing, although, I can't be certain as I don't really drive much in the dark, especially as it's been icy recently.

Any info would be greatfully recieved.

Stu.

My car's alternator was making similar chinking sounds with the headlights on. I've fitted a new one and it seems to have cured it.

Ahh...

But this is almost like a constant squeak when running with the lights on.

I've probably stuffed the alternator by covering it in rusty old water...

I've access to another, but I wont be the one changing it! Had enough of the site of my underbonnet at the moment :(

Thanks Steve.

Spray some WD40 on the belt when the engine is running. If the squealing stops then chances are the alternator belt is too loose or just old and hard.
