I'm fitting a new aerial and have run into a problem. I attached string to the old one and attached it tothe new one to pull through....but it will only go so far and comes up against something in the door pillar.
It just refuses to pull al the way through. It also seem to be shredding when I try and pull it into the drives compartment.
I am routing by pulling it through the same gap under the fuse box.

Can anybody please give me an idea what is happening and how to get this lead through.

Many thanks

Hi,

Pull the aerial wire back out again and make sure the string is still secure. Then wrap some insulation tape tightly around the cable and as if you were taping up a wiring loom hold the string against the plug wrap the tape all the way down over the plug and the string.

Don't make the taping too thick, and this way it will stop the plug snagging on the A post as it turns through 90degrees where it comes through the hole into the cabin. ;)

When you get as far as fitting the long shaft into the A post give it a wiggle about as you pull on the cable.:)

That is a very good tip. I have also had much success by getting some tv aerial cable, stripping off the outer insulation and copper braiding leaving the solid conductor and plastic insulation. Push this wire up from where you expect the car aerial wire to come out so that it threads itself through the A pillar and out of the aerial hole in the roof. Bare some of the solid conductor and wrap it round the car aerial plug. You can then yank and pull (gently) with this wire and as it is stiff yet slippy it can be used to manoevre the car aerial plug around obstacles in the A pillar and out into the passenger compartment. It needs to be looped over the drivers demist duct. I hope that makes sense

I've done that but with no luck.
I've got a loop of string that goes through ok. even a straight coat hanger goes with a push. I have shone a light and can see the turn at the bottom but when the cable goes down it gets stuck fast and shreads the taper.
Is this the only way to get the cable into the cab?

In the past,if the metal aerial has snapped ,or been snapped ,normally by the little toe-rags around here, then after undoing the 2 screws that sercure it in the roof, ive cut the aerial wire off ,as it attachs to the aerial body, then tapped the new aerial wire to it and pull it back through.

Works every time, and ive never had a problem, but if you have already pulled it out, then im afraid your going to struggle now.......:banghead: ;)

Hi the method you are trying is the only way really to get the aerial cable into the car, but if your string is not strong enough or the knot that you have tied is too bulky you will struggle.

I have successfully used string in the past but it was really strong and not too thick, but the method I nearly always use is I have a piece of electrical cable that is about 5mm diameter and multi stranded. I have bared about 100mm of plastic off of the cable and I weave the copper strands around the aerial plug and wire and tightly secure it by wrapping insulation tape around it like I do with string.

This way sounds very similar to the way that Simon has described and works every time because you don’t have to worry about breaking the string, and as long as you’ve secured the wires good you can give it a good hard tug if the cable snags.

Many thanks for the hints. As soon as it stops raining I'll give
it another go. Pending that I'll just have to hire a small child from the local
ned community and stuff it down the door pillar post to feed it through for me:laugh:
