Hi all,

Was recently driving up the M6 motorway accelerating lane at about 65/70 mph in fourth gear about to change at the peak of the rev band when the speedo needle gave up and dropped right down to 0 mph. I've checked the fuses and can't find a problem there. Is it something more sinister gone wrong then such as the cable? Is it easy to fix? It's on my 101,000 miler '94 Turbo Diesel by the way...

IIRC the speedo is completely mechanical so checking the fuses wont help.

The cable runs from the gearbox to the back of the speedo and are easy to change although fiddly to get off the back of the speedo the first time the instrument panel is removed.

Hope this helps.

Check the attachments at both ends. If these are fine, the problem may be in the clock unit itself - i.e. the cogs all chewed up.

The speedo is mechanical, it may have popped off at either end of the cable which is likely.

I have also had the cable itself snap before now - check for a kink in the cable - also usually signified by a black oily substance when you unplug the cable from the back of the speedo - which can be a very tricky job.
