I have a rattly speaker in R514's drivers door... on removal today, I discovered a slight amount of water collected in the speaker compartment. I have a feeling this has damaged the speaker, as I can see marks on the speaker itself where the water has been.

Is it true that sticking a small strip of masking tape on the paper of the speaker can stop it from rattling? Or do I remember wrong...?

Steve,

You could try that but I doubt it'd solve the problem - it'd still sound crap. What *would* solve the problem would be a pair of replacement speakers direct from Ledders (I saw then when I was last there). I'm off there in the next fortnight so can pick them up if you like.

Or you could, of course, buy a nice pair or replacement speakers from a motorfactors - I have a pair of Panasonic 2-way speakers that were £20 and sound pukka if not all that bassy.

There should be a black plastic guard which covers the back of the speaker and protects it from moisture.

Will buy some nice new 'ens from Halfrauds or a local shop, what size are they exactly?

The back of the speaker looks ok, it has got in from the front somehow. :banghead:

yeah ive had the same problem, i just replaced my speakers with fresh ones, there was no way of them being any good anymore. it may be best to get some new ones if they've been in the car from new. you may have some luck at a scrap yard...?

The original Austin ones do age rather badly - try some new replacements - Halfords is easy - just take the old one in with you and match the correct size.

I think they are 5 inch, (measure across the diameter of the speaker to check) Although 6.5 inch ones can be made to fit and sound 10 times better :D Avoid the standard ones as they age terribly, (the rears are even worse). A local motorfactors will have some suitable ones for 20-30 quid. There should be a water shield (read bit of plastic) covering the back of the speaker to protect from water. If the water got into the front of the speaker it is either from a dodgy door seal or perhaps the speaker is so broke it is leaking water through it.

Speaker size will depend on which doors are fitted. Later Maestros used doors with larger speaker cutouts. The advantage of the later type doors is you could put the bigger montego front speakers in and also add the factory fit tweeters in the door tops. Good improvment in sound quality which looks factory fit ;-)

I remember helping my dad replace the speakers on his 1989 Montego 1.6L when the car was only three years old. As mentioned here, we put some new speakers from a motor factors in those neat speaker housings behind the headrests.

I found some Blaupunkts that are the right size for the grilles in rear parcel shelf mount for the Maestro. I have had those for about seven years and they still sound very good.
